The primary difference between memoirs and other pieces is that memoirs are more personal and, thus, more likely to give the reader a truer sense of who an author is as a person. As style is intimately connected to personal experience and perspective, memoirs provide us a unique window through which we can begin to see those connections. As you probably learned by reading "Terwilliger Bunts One," sometimes the connection is explicit. In the Bourdain piece we read in class, you may have noticed many elements of Bourdain's strong writing style. In groups of 3 or 4, you will be analyzing one specific element of that style, and giving a brief presentation to the class which explains your analysis. You may want to consider Bourdain's use of syntax, diction, imagery, and details, though you may also want to consider his use of analogy, metaphor, structure, or humor. This assignment is worth 100 points, and the rubric will be posted soon. You may use any of the materials located in this classroom, or any materials that you may want to bring from home, but this is to be primarily an in-class project.
