Since week one of our course, you've had practice working with DIDLS. You have grown to understand how the various components of DIDLS work to establish tone. I think each of you has shown an increased ability to explore the diction, imagery, details, and language of a piece to gain a greater sense of writers' purposes and writers' ability to affect mood and tone in order to achieve their purposes. One area in which I think we need work as we prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam in May is our ability to explore and make sense of writers' use of syntax in their work. After all, sentences are the basic unit of writing. Without them, language of any kind would not exist.
In this task, we will explore closely two syntactical structures: loose and periodic sentences. All sentences fit into one of these two categories, or into both at the same time, but more on that later.
A few things to note as you progress through this task:
1. Look for highlighted blue links, like the one above. These links will provide you with additional resources to aid in your understanding of the contents of this task as you progress through it.
2. Much of this task is to be completed at your own pace; however, portions of this task require you to work in groups, so you must work diligently. You will have approximately one hour of class time each day for the next three days, as well as any time you need at home, to complete all components of this task.
3. If you find that you need additional assistance at any time, I am of course available to provide that assistance in class as well as through the Ask Mr. Wells section of the discussion board if you have a question outside of class.
Now, it's on to Step 1 !
